Pimpinella anisum (Anise)
Pimpinella anisum (Anise)
Anise has been cultivated for centuries for its aromatic seeds, which are highly valued for their sweet, licorice-like flavor and medicinal properties.
Anise produces small, white flowers that are arranged in umbels. The flowers bloom in the summer and are attractive to pollinators, particularly bees.
The seeds, which are technically fruits, are small, ridged, and oval-shaped, with a grayish-brown color. They have a strong, sweet aroma and taste similar to licorice, fennel, or star anise. These seeds are the primary reason anise is cultivated.
Anise thrives in full sun, requiring plenty of direct sunlight for optimal growth and seed production. It prefers well-drained, light, and moderately fertile soil. Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods, but it is important not to overwater. The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Anise grows best in warm, frost-free climates.
