Lunaria annua Violet

Lunaria is well known for the silvery, moon-like remains of the seed cases that are so useful for drying and using in arrangements.

Attractive bright purple flowers appear the second year after planting and flower in early summer.

It takes 2 years to flower, in the first year the basal leaves appear. It grows in shade or half shade.

Over time the skin and seeds fall off and revealing the central membrane which is white with a silvery sheen.

The seed pods remain on the plant during winter.

Requires a humus-rich, well-drained ordinary soil.

They are a boon to local bees and butterflies.
