Cucurbita pepo Black Warted Portuguese

Cucurbita pepo Black Warted Portuguese

Ribbed, partly warted decorative pumpkin.

An old, very beautiful Portuguese country variety, dark green, ribbed and mostly warted.

At around 5-7 kg a larger decorative pumpkin, less suitable as a table pumpkin.

Black Warted Portuguese grows quite vigorously, and as a southern European it is not one of the early pumpkin varieties.

Ripening time: 100-110 days.

Black Warted Portuguese is vining strongly.

C. pepo grows well on warm, well-drained soils, pre-cultivation and planting with sowing from the end of April or direct sowing from the beginning of May.

Optimum germination at 24-30o C. When sowing stick the pointed side of the seed down or lay them flat. Do not keep the seed too moist. After germination, place in a brighter and cooler place.

For Black Warted Portuguese we recommend around 2-3 square meters per plant.

Possible pests: snails, birds, mice, lice, powdery mildew, virus.
