Cynara scolymus (Artichoke) Grosse von Laon

Cynara scolymus (Artichoke) Grosse von Laon

Decorative delicacy vegetables and a decorative flower.

Artichokes are impressive and decorative large perennials in the garden. The flowers are dark blue and contrast beautifully with the gray-silver foliage.

Harvested in buds, the flowers are used as flower bases, as are the scale leaves, which are a delicacy in the kitchen.

The seeds are sown under glass in February-March / March-April at 20-22 ° C. directly with one seed in a small pot. The seeds germinate within about 14-20 days. As soon as the plants are large enough, they are planted directly outdoors at a distance of about 80 x 80 cm. In the first year the harvest takes place from August, in subsequent years from July.

Artichokes are perennials that like well-drained soil. Especially in winter, wet and cold conditions can lead to failures. We recommend pruning, covering with straw and covering with foil until mid-March. Protected in this way, artichokes can last for several years.
