Cyperus papyrus

Cyperus papyrus

A tall, aquatic or semi-aquatic sedge. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa.

Papyrus can grow to heights of 2 to 5 meters (6.5 to 16.5 feet), making it a prominent and visually striking plant in wetland environments.

These stems are rigid, leafless, and topped with feathery umbels. At the top of each stem, the plant produces a dense, tufted cluster of thin, arching bracts that form an umbrella-like structure. These bracts can spread up to 30 cm (12 inches) wide.

In ancient Egypt, papyrus was a crucial material for making one of the world’s earliest forms of paper. Strips of its pith were laid in overlapping layers, pressed, and dried to create sheets.

Height: 200 cm.
