Matricaria recutita (Chamomile)
Matricaria recutita (Chamomile)
Commonly known as German chamomile or Matricaria chamomilla, is a popular annual herb well-known for its medicinal and aromatic properties.
The leaves are fine, feathery, and light green, giving the plant a delicate, airy appearance. They are pinnately divided into linear segments, making the foliage appear soft and fern-like.
The flowers are small, daisy-like, and very aromatic. Each flower has a central yellow disk, surrounded by white petals (ray florets). The yellow center is dome-shaped and becomes more pronounced as the flower matures. The flowers are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.
German chamomile has a sweet, apple-like fragrance, which is where the name “chamomile” originates (from the Greek “chamaimēlon,” meaning “ground apple”).
