Raphanus sativus (Rettich/Daikon) Misato Red

Raphanus sativus (Rettich/Daikon) Misato Red

Interesting Asian radish specialty. An interesting specialty is Misato Red, originally from China and very popular in Japan.

Misato Red can be harvested as both a giant radish and a radish. If you leave the tubers to 10-12 cm in diameter in the fall, the white flesh will still remain tender and mild in taste. Can also be sown as giant radishes from spring onwards. As a radish, Misato grows best with a fall harvest.

Sowing takes place outdoors from June to early September, spacing 20 cm between rows and 15 cm within rows. The harvest takes place from around September to November, depending on the sowing date.

Radishes should always be well watered and not harvested overripe and should never be left dry as this leads to spiciness and woodiness.
